Burton owner bars Vladimir Putin from her pub

A Burton owner has banned Russian President Vladimir Putin from her pub.

Sam Rice, who runs the Loaf and Cheese, says Mr Putin is not welcome at his Waterloo Street bar as he continues to lead an invasion of Ukraine.

She says her customers are disgusted by Russia’s actions – so much so that they would ‘destroy’ Mr Putin if he ever tried to come in for a pint.

She said: “What he’s doing is just plain wrong. That’s all my clients are talking about right now.

“They said if he came in they would tear him down. It’s absolutely wrong what he’s doing.”

Ms Rice’s sanctions are the latest to hit the president after US credit card giants Visa and Mastercard announced they would suspend business operations in Russia.

Russian vodka has also been removed from most supermarkets, while Formula 1’s Russian Grand Prix has been axed – and Russia has been kicked out of the World Cup and the Eurovision Song Contest.

Elsewhere in Burton, dozens of homes and businesses have opened their doors to collections for Ukrainians fleeing their homes. They were greeted by floods of donations.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February. It is the largest conventional military attack against a sovereign state in Europe since World War II.

Mr Putin recently placed his nuclear forces on high alert, increasing tensions between the West and Russia.

The invasion caused a refugee crisis – the largest in Europe since World War II.

In the first week of the conflict, more than a million people fled Ukraine.
