A Federal High Court in Gusau, Zamfara State overturned the new People’s Democratic Primary (PDP) primaries in Zamfara State and ruled that the PDP would not field any candidates for the election of Governor of 2023 in the state.

The court had previously canceled the primaries in which Dauda Lawal Dare garnered 431 votes to become Zamfara PDP candidate for governor on May 25, 2022.

Three other contenders – Abubakar Nakwada, Wadatau Madawaki and Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau – had previously withdrawn from the race, alleging irregularities.

But Adamu Maina, the returning officer for the primary, said their withdrawal was denied because it was without notice.

However, in June, Shehu-Gusau, Madawaki and Aliyu Hafiz Muhammad – another contender – filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the primary that produced Lawal as the party’s candidate.

They requested the cancellation of the exercise due to alleged anomalies, contradictions, fraud, violation of the electoral law and the constitution of the party, among others.

In rendering judgment in September, Judge Aminu Bappa answered all the plaintiffs’ prayers and quashed the primary.

He also ordered that a new primary be conducted to produce a standard bearer, but Dare emerged victorious in the new primary.

However, in a decision issued on Tuesday, Bappa canceled the primaries. Lawal garnered 431 votes to win the gubernatorial ticket in the party’s primary held on May 25, 2022.
