The Electoral Commission banned Trinamool Congress MP Narendranath Chakraborty from campaigning for partial polls in two constituencies in West Bengal for violating the model code of conduct by openly threatening BJP voters and supporters.
The Pandabeswar MP was recently heard telling party workers in an alleged video to intimidate BJP supporters into not going to polling stations.
“The Commission, orders that he be prohibited from holding public meetings, public rallies, road shows and interviews, public statements in the media in connection with the current by-election for one week (from March 30 10 a.m. to 6 April 2022 8 p.m.),” the EC said in a communication to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal.
By-elections in Asansol Lok Sabha constituency and Ballygunje assembly seat will be held on April 12, and votes will be counted on April 16.
