An office worker took the day off for a marathon challenge – a world record pub crawl visiting 56 bars in 24 hours.

Gareth Murphy, 29, had a drink in each of the 56 pubs before he could move on to the next watering hole.

Computer scientist Gareth embarked on a giant crawl of Cardiff pubs as he downed a mix of alcoholic and soft drinks throughout the day.

And it surpassed the old world record of 51 pubs previously set by Englishman Matt Ellis in 2021.

“I’ve lost count of how many bathroom breaks I’ve taken,” Gareth said.

“At first it was minimal, once every 10 pubs let’s say, but in the end I think I was going once every two or three pubs.”

“I knew the best place to do this was in the center of Cardiff.”

Gareth, from Caernarfon, North Wales, chose the Welsh capital because the town center has the highest density of pubs, bars and clubs in the UK, with over 300 licensed establishments in a 0.5 square mile area.

He started the day shortly after 10am with a lemonade at a Wetherspoons, before moving on and continuing until 9.26pm after hitting 56.

His tactic on choosing drinks was to pick “just what came off the easiest”.

He added: “However, as the day progressed, I noticed that apple juice went down better than orange juice.

“By far the hardest part was the bloat from drinking so much. It didn’t help that I couldn’t burp myself either.

“It was a long and tiring day. The hardest thing I have ever done in my life.”

Gareth’s favorite drink is “a nice cold pint of Guinness”, although he had to limit himself to just 125ml during this record attempt.

“I knew I had to avoid Guinness because it’s quite a heavy drink. I had a beer in a few select pubs but knew I couldn’t overdo it as I knew the fizz would immediately get me bloated.

Her full-day marathon in February has now been recognized by Guinness World Records with a certificate proudly on her wall.

On breaking the record, Gareth said: “It’s been worth all the hard work and preparation. It’s great to achieve something like this.”

Gareth drank the following drinks during the day: 4,915 ml (8.6 pints) orange juice, 2,845 ml (5 pints) apple juice, 1,023 ml (1.8 pints) beer , 500 ml (0.8 pint) lemonade, 284 ml (0.5 pint) Diet Pepsi, 250 ml (0.4 pint) Tango, 189 ml (0.33 pint) black currant cordial, 125 ml (0.2 pints) of Coca-Cola, 125 ml (0.2 pints) of Guinness and 125 ml (0.2 pints) of cranberry juice.

A Guinness World Records spokesperson said: “For the purposes of this record, a pub is defined as an establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages on the premises, although the challenger is not required to consume alcohol.

“In addition to video evidence of the complete attempt, a logbook must be signed by an employee at each pub to confirm that a drink was purchased and consumed.”
