Mr Miyagi is opening a fire-powered pop-up restaurant at QT Melbourne – with a brand new menu

When you think of Mr. Miyagi, there’s a good chance this The nori salmon taco immediately comes to mind. Imagine how many of them the lively Japanese-inspired restaurant has produced since it opened in 2013.

For nearly a decade, the taco (and, of course, the restaurant itself) has garnered a loyal following. But now Mr. Miyagi is growing – for a limited time only. The team has just announced that they are crossing the river to open a pop-up restaurant in the CBD.

For six weeks from Thursday June 30, Mr Miyagi in the Big Smoke will take over the QT Melbourne boutique hotel on Russell Street. Its hidden event space, called Hot Sauce Laneway, is being converted in the style of Mr. Miyagi.

Executive Chef Kyle Doody sticks to the brand’s signature Japanese influence, but you can expect an all-new menu centered around charcoal-cooked protein.

To rival the hard-shelled salmon taco, a soft-shelled variant was recently developed: a homemade nori tortilla will be stacked with rockling, shishito charry peppers and shiso salt. There will also be smoked salmon served at the table in a bell jar filled with smoke; togarashi lamb chops with edamame and mushy peas; and more.

According to Mr. Miyagi’s founder, Kristian Klein, “This [pop-up] The idea was born while Executive Chef Kyle Doody camped out on the banks of the Murray and cooked over a blazing fire pit.

“The wood smoke flavor is just as important in this menu as the salt,” he adds. “We wanted to incorporate some of the amazing flavors that everyone loves in smoked foods with our signature Mr Miyagi style.”
