If you think Perth still deserves the nickname Dullsville, you haven’t been paying attention.
Despite a pandemic trying to chill our spirits, WA’s bar scene is healthy and thriving. Indeed, these days it seems to be more a case of – so many bars, so little time.
In a bid to help you discover the best bars Perth has to offer (and some worth starting the car), here are five of the best drinking hotspots from PLAY’s ultimate guide.
These will help you plan your next pub crawl, family catch-up or date night. Cheers!
Gem of the city
If Paradiso
1/446 Beaufort Street, Highgate
This massive Highgate bar might be best known as a late-night hangout, but its food deserves kudos, too. There’s an element of creativity and care in every dish with freshly made pasta, blistered pizza topped with seasonal ingredients, not to mention his awesome take on the retro Alaskan dessert bomb.
Rockin’ the suburbs
King Sum
13 King William Street, Bayswater
If every neighborhood had a bar like this, we would be very happy. The laid-back bottle shop and bar combo, owned by the team behind hotspot Subi Juanita’s, is the perfect place to roost in winter with a drop of your choice and a pizza or three. Don’t blame us if you’re still seated four hours later. It’s that kind of place.

The best of Freo
Republic of Fremantle
3 Pakenham Street, Fremantle
This place is lauded for having one of the best cocktail menus in WA, and we’d have to agree. The urban distillery makes its own vodkas and gins, which can be enjoyed on a tasting flight or in one of their alcoholic creations. A favorite novelty is the millionaire, which is topped with a steaming fun bubble. Quickly pull out your phone to capture the magic before it happens!

It’s worth the detour
Social Neighborhood Bungalow
226 Tce Naturalist, Dunsborough
You’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re in the heart of Dunsborough when relaxing in this bar, with its spacious and elegant layout surrounded by towering trees and a stream. The welcome addition to one of WA’s most popular tourist towns offers a thoughtful array of natural wines, sourdough pizzas and sharing plates, plus the refreshing holiday vibe we crave when we escape the great smoke.

Bring the family
little creatures
40 Mews Road, Fremantle
The OG of WA craft beer venues continue to operate 22 years after opening in a large shed in Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbor that was a crocodile farm and housed Kookaburra II before being transformed into a world famous microbrewery. Although there has been talk of Little Creatures leaving its iconic home, there has been a stay of execution and the smiling cherub will continue to serve fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas and tasty fries in its vast great hall, all washed down with classic beers. , including Pale Ale, the very first beer from Little Creatures that has followed the same recipe for two decades.
